Salem

Creative Excellence

For WGN America’s first original series, Salem, I developed the “Ducking Stool” teaser — a visually arresting concept shot from a witch’s own, unnervingly calm perspective. This bold creative vision cut through the supernatural TV clutter, positioned the network as a premium content player, and proved that distinctive, research-driven ideas win attention.

Historical Horror Meets Original Series Branding

At the time, WGN America was preparing to launch its first original series, Salem, and the creative team was searching for a promotional concept that would break through the noise of an already crowded supernatural TV market. I was inspired by historical “ducking stool” punishments—viewed here through a witch’s own, unnervingly calm perspective.

Challenge
Develop a standout teaser for a WGN America’s high-stakes first original series that felt authentic, memorable, and distinct from an oversaturated supernatural market.

Strategy
Reimagine a historical witch trial punishment from the victim’s underwater POV — blending period-accurate prop design, horror-inspired cinematography, and a subversion of audience expectations.

Impact
Contributed to 1.52M premiere viewers (network’s highest-rated telecast since 2007) | Elevated WGN America’s brand perception | Created one of the most memorable historical horror promos in network history.
