HarmonQuest Claymation – Creative Excellence on a Lean Budget

Award-Winning Claymation, Delivered on a Shoestring.

Resourcefulness and creative innovation under pressure can sometimes be aided by constraints. This is a project where resource limitations led to sublime results. We delivered a multi-award-winning 15-second teaser ID for HarmonQuest Season 3—an original VRV series from Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon. This high-impact creative became a benchmark for low-cost, high-return production excellence.

Challenge

Develop a distinctive network identity piece that conveyed the irreverent spirit of HarmonQuest, sparked industry buzz, and elevated VRV’s brand credibility. The claymation concept aimed to distill the arc of the titular character into a rich visual moment—in just 15 seconds.

We needed to balance bold creative ambition with tight budget constraints and navigate multiple layers of stakeholder approval—including internal teams and Dan Harmon’s office.

Strategy

We leaned into constraints, empowering the team to deliver creatively within them. The focus was on creating a replicable model for high-quality, low-cost execution—backed by stakeholder trust, creative freedom, and team ownership.

Execution

  • Process Optimization: Directly secured a claymation expert and negotiated budget-friendly sound mixing—reducing costs by 300% relative to agency estimates. Streamlined the review cycle to accelerate approvals across multiple stakeholders.

  • Adaptive Leadership: When feedback loops threatened timelines, I restructured the review processes and managed Dan Harmon’s team's expectations to ensure alignment.

  • Team Enablement: Cultivated psychological safety so the team could take creative risks. Coached team members on stakeholder navigation, turning this project into a leadership development opportunity.

  • Lead by Results: Prioritized outcomes over credit—focusing on awards, stakeholder satisfaction, and team growth.

Results

  • Business Impact: Delivered a standout creative asset that earned Telly, Marcom, and Muse Awards—contributing to a 40+ award career milestone.

  • Team Development: Motion designer and producer advanced to senior roles after demonstrating creative leadership.

  • Stakeholder Success: Gained full approval from all parties, including Dan Harmon—strengthening our relationship with the IP’s creators.

  • Framework Creation: Sparked a new low-cost production model, later adopted for other high-impact projects across the network.

Learnings

  • Constraints can drive breakthrough innovation when paired with clarity and trust.

  • Empowering teams to take creative risks yields exponential returns.

  • Transparent stakeholder management bridges creative vision with business objectives.
